How to Delete an AOL Mail Account

Most people deleting an AOL account today are closing something they opened decades ago — which means two traps. First, some AOL accounts still carry a paid plan (AOL Advantage, tech support, or identity products) that quietly bills a card or bank account, and deleting the free account is not the same as cancelling the plan. Second, that old inbox may hold 20 years of receipts, contacts, and account signups you'll want before it's gone. Handle both before touching the termination page.

Step 0: Cancel paid AOL plans first

1. Check whether anything is billing

   Sign in at aol.com, open your account settings, and look for My Subscriptions (or "Subscriptions" under the account/billing menu at myaccount.aol.com). Also scan recent bank and card statements for "AOL" charges — old plans sometimes bill an account you've forgotten about.

2. Cancel each paid plan

   Use the cancel option next to each subscription. If the plan was set up by phone or can't be cancelled online, call AOL's customer support line to cancel; ask for a confirmation number or email.

3. Wait for written confirmation

   Don't terminate the account until the cancellation confirmation arrives. Once the account is closed you'll have a much harder time proving or managing anything about the plan.

Back up decades of email and contacts

1. Sync everything to a desktop client via IMAP

   AOL has no bulk "download my mail" button, so use IMAP: add the account to Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Outlook desktop with server imap.aol.com, port 993, SSL. If the client is refused, generate an app password under Account Security in your AOL account settings. Let every folder sync — a mailbox going back to the 2000s can take many hours — then spot-check that old messages and attachments open offline.

2. Export your contacts

   In AOL Mail, open Contacts and use the export option to save a CSV. Contacts are deleted with the account and are not included in an IMAP mail sync.

3. Find accounts still registered to the address

   Search the mailbox for "verify", "welcome", "receipt", and "password reset" to surface banks, utilities, and subscriptions still pointing at your AOL address. Update each to a new address before deleting — afterwards, their reset emails will go nowhere useful, and possibly, one day, to someone else (see below).

4. Set up and announce your new address

   There's no forwarding after termination, so tell important contacts your new address while the AOL account still works. If spam is what's driving you off AOL, consider fixing the spam or starting fresh with alias-based signups so the new address stays clean.

Delete the account: step by step

AOL is owned by Yahoo Inc., the same company that runs Yahoo Mail, and its account systems have converged with Yahoo's — so this flow will look familiar if you've read our Yahoo deletion guide.

1. Sign in to the account

   Go to login.aol.com and sign in. If the password is long lost, recover it first via the "Forgot password" flow — you can't terminate an account you can't open. Recovery usually needs the phone number or backup email on file, which for very old accounts may itself be stale; AOL Help has a process for that.

2. Open the account termination page

   The termination flow lives on a dedicated page, not in Mail settings. Open AOL Help at help.aol.com and search for "delete or cancel your AOL account" — the article links to the termination page (historically at a path like aol.com/account/delete-user, mirroring Yahoo's). You can also look for a delete or terminate option under Manage my account.

3. Read the warning and confirm your password

   The page spells out what's deleted: your mailbox, contacts, and anything else tied to the AOL username. Re-enter your password (and complete two-step verification if enabled) to confirm it's you.

4. Acknowledge and terminate

   Tick the acknowledgment and confirm termination. You're signed out immediately and the account enters its deactivation period.

What happens after termination

• Mail stops immediately. You can't send or receive, and there is no forwarding or auto-reply for a closed account.
• Senders eventually get bounces. Once the account is fully deleted, mail to the address is rejected.
• The address may not stay yours forever. AOL's parent company has recycled usernames on its platforms in the past, so don't assume the address is permanently retired the way a deleted Gmail address is. This is exactly why updating bank and subscription logins beforehand matters.
• Anything using "Sign in with AOL" breaks, along with any site that emails codes or resets to the AOL address.
• Paid plans are separate — if you skipped Step 0, billing can continue after the account closes. Cancel first, always.

The 30-day reactivation window (and 90-day purge)

Two clocks start when you terminate, and people often confuse them:

• Reactivation window — about 30 days. Sign back in at login.aol.com with your old credentials during this period and AOL will offer to reactivate the account, typically with mail and settings intact. (As with Yahoo, some regions get a longer hold.)
• Data purge — up to about 90 days. After the reactivation window closes, AOL says remaining account data may take up to roughly 90 days to be scrubbed from its systems. This is a background deletion process, not extra recovery time — once your sign-in stops reactivating the account, neither you nor AOL support can get the data back.
